China delivers drama on F1 return

While unpredictability was expected in Shanghai as Formula 1 returned to China for the first time since 2019, few could have predicted the high-drama that unfolded during qualifying.

Sprint qualifying made its debut at the Shanghai International Circuit, with drivers competing over 100km for the chance to start Sunday's race in the top 10.

It was Red Bull's Max Verstappen who emerged victorious, taking his third sprint victory of the 2024 season. However, it was far from a straightforward triumph for the Dutchman.

Verstappen made a poor start and dropped down to fourth place, but he fought his way back up the order to take the lead on lap 10. He then held off a challenge from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to claim the win.

Leclerc will start Sunday's race in second place, with Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez completing the front row.

Behind the top three, there was a lot of movement throughout the field. Carlos Sainz Jr. finished fourth for Ferrari, with Lando Norris fifth for McLaren.

Fernando Alonso finished sixth for Aston Martin, while Sebastian Vettel took seventh for Alpine. George Russell was eighth for Mercedes, with Esteban Ocon ninth for Alpine, and Pierre Gasly took the final point for AlphaTauri.
