Iconic Chef's Property Suffers Extensive Damage
Firefighters Battle Blaze, Cause Remains Unknown
In a devastating turn of events, the iconic barn at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage property in Devon, England, was severely damaged by fire on Saturday evening. The blaze, which broke out around 8 pm, caused extensive damage to the structure, which housed the show's kitchen and production studio.
According to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, approximately 20 firefighters spent several hours battling the flames. "The fire was a challenging one to extinguish, due to the building's size and the intense heat," said a spokesperson for the service. "Crews used multiple jets and aerial appliances to bring the fire under control."
No one was injured in the fire, but the extent of the damage to the barn and its contents is still being assessed. Fearnley-Whittingstall, the renowned chef and environmental activist, expressed his sadness over the incident.
"We are devastated by the fire at River Cottage," he said in a statement. "The barn was the heart of our operation, and it will be a long and difficult road to rebuild. We are grateful to the firefighters who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent further damage."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is working with Devon and Cornwall Police to determine what sparked the blaze.
