In a significant development, Ismael El Mayo Zambada, 76, the reputed co-founder and leader of the powerful Sinaloa cartel, and the son of his former associate, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, were arrested on Thursday in El Paso, Texas. The arrests mark a major coup in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
The United States Attorney General, Merrick Garland, announced the arrests, highlighting the role Mr. Zambada GarcÃa played in the rise of fentanyl, a synthetic drug responsible for numerous overdoses. The State Department recently increased the reward for his capture to $15 million.
The arrests were carried out by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Mexican army, who collaborated to apprehend the suspects in El Paso, Texas. The arrests are expected to disrupt the operations of the Sinaloa cartel and send a strong message to other drug trafficking organizations.
