Inhofe was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on November 17, 1934. He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Oklahoma State University. After working as a civil engineer and businessman, Inhofe entered politics, serving in the Oklahoma State Senate from 1967 to 1977 and the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1994.

As a senator, Inhofe was known for his staunch conservative views and his skepticism of climate change. He served as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 2015 to 2021, overseeing the nation's defense policy during a period of heightened global tensions. Inhofe was also a vocal critic of the Affordable Care Act and a strong advocate for the military and veterans.
